Brian Thomas, a rancher and director for the GCC, made a pivotal decision in 2000 when he sold a significant portion of his family ranch to The Nature Trust of BC. This move helped prevent development and ensured the land would remain a working ranch, conserved for future generations while continuing to support sustainable grazing. His story illustrates how ranching families can play a central role in protecting grassland ecosystems.
Bob Haywood‑Farmer of Indian Gardens Ranch Ltd. and a director of the GCC has been grazing cattle in the Tunkwa Lake area long before the establishment of Tunkwa Lake Provincial Park in 1996. His long‑term perspective highlights how livestock grazing can be integrated with protected areas, supporting both ecological values and rural livelihoods.
During this webinar, Bob and Brian will discuss:
1)Why grasslands are vital for biodiversity, culture, and working landscapes.
2)How grazing on protected grasslands has functioned alongside conservation goals.
3)Practical examples of ranching operations that contribute to long‑term grassland protection.
This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from two leaders who have lived and experienced the reality of “keeping grasslands forever” in British Columbia. Whether you’re a rancher, conservationist, planner, educator, or simply care about grasslands, you won’t want to miss this conversation. Register now and be part of the conversation about the future of BC’s grasslands.
